Nokia E62 Review
Rating: 5.0 / 10
The Nokia E62 has been termed "a smart phone for the masses." While it is true that the E62 lacks some of the operating speed and complex functionality of the true business-class powerhouses, the E62 nonetheless offers solid and reliable usefulness in a dizzying array of applications.
The E62's styling, while thin and sleek, is reminiscent in shape and style of the older bulky PDA models. The buttons are basic but quite responsive. Navigation is accomplished through use of a joystick, which raises a possible concern about the longevity of any particular unit. Small built in joysticks were popular on earlier laptop computers, but have mostly become extinct due to their tendency to break under real world conditions. A broken joystick can render the phone almost unusable, though an equipment protection plan will ensure that your out of pocket cost for repair or replacement is minimal. Most users will likely not keep the phone for more than a few years anyway, so the joystick is a relatively minor concern.
As a phone, the E62 performs admirably, offering enhanced features ranging from call waiting to voice dialing. It is highly recommended that users take advantage of the integrated Bluetooth capability to connect a hands-free headset, as the blocky styling of the E62 makes holding the phone to one's ear a bit awkward and uncomfortable.
The Nokia E62 provides a number of business solutions. One button email access is a nice feature, although the phone will support multiple email accounts through many different servers. The Word, Excel, and PowerPoint viewers are able to handle even extremely complicated charts and presentations, though the load time is fairly slow. The mobile browser is excellent, handling even difficult Java sites. Multimedia capabilities on the phone include support for streaming video and audio as well as multimedia text messaging.
Unlike its overseas sister, the E61, the Nokia E62 does not offer integrated Wi-Fi capabilities. Nor does the E62 operate on the new EV-DO cellular broadband network. Rather, the E62 uses the older EDGE technology, providing browser rates that are more in line with dialup than broadband speed. Whether this is a problem for you depends on how often you plan to be online and what you need to accomplish when you are there. For sending and receiving email, the EDGE technology works just fine.
The Nokia E62 is priced to sell, at a rate well below that of many of its competitors. The phone is not a data powerhouse as are some of its high end competitors. However, the phone offers enhanced voice call and text messaging features, good multimedia capability, and several features for enhanced business functionality. The E62 appears poised to take over a significant portion of the smart phone market.
