Nokia 5300 XpressMusic Review
Rating: not yet rated
This great little phone is a Godsend for music lovers who want their tunes to go bundled with their cell phone. The music player/ phone trend hit it big beginning in 2006 and carries through with the debut of Nokia's contribution in the stylish 5300 Xpress Music.
The Features
This phone has the basics we've come to expect from the Nokia brand. It has a 1.3 MP camera with zoom and video recording capabilities, a micro SD slot that supports an additional 2 MB of storage, speaker phone option and stereo Bluetooth . The Xpress comes loaded with the push to talk capability and a 2 inch QVGA display.
The Quirks
The internal memory is a little low at 5 MB, especially for a phone designed to feature music. This limited internal storage is not pleasant, as it almost necessitates the purchasing of a storage card to load any useable amount of music onto your phone.
It also has a design quirk where the SD slot is located behind the battery door. As long as you don't need to swap out your card, this may not be a big deal, but it's still awkward placement.
The camera doesn't have a flash this time around either, which is a big bummer for many customers. What good is having great tunes when you can't shoot quality pictures of your friends indulging in a little letting-it-all-hang-out dancing, so you can post them on myspace and embarrass them later?
The Style
This lovely little slider is a little boxy but it seems to pull it off. It comes in red and white or red and black, a very visually pleasing combo, and is user friendly in its design. The buttons are raised and the controls are rubberized for easy operation in the darkness of your pocket. The Xpress also has a quick-on, exterior play/stop button that activates your music, a great feature in my opinion.
Using the Thing
Overall the Xpress interfaces well via USB to your computer and has user friendly menus. One nifty trick is that if you hover over a command a little too long, Nokia's help function prompts you with a detailed explanation of the displayed command. This is especially helpful for those peeps who throw out their user's manual as soon as they open then box. Now when you get lost, Nokia spoon feeds the directions to you!
Where To Get It
While previously only available from overseas in an unlocked version, T Mobile has announced that it will carry the 5300 Xpress Music beginning February 28th, 2007. Getting the unlocked version may make the push to talk feature useless as most carriers won't supply this service to any phone that's not "theirs". The unlocked version sells for around $272 while T Mobile will offer it at $99 with a service contract. T Mobile even delivers the goods by including a 1 GB storage card, stereo headphones and a headphone adapter with the purchase of the phone. How about that! A carrier that gives you the goodies that actually need to use your phone! Hello T Mobile!
