Motorola RAZR V3i Review
Rating: 7.0 / 10
The Motorola RAZR V series is legendary. Many competitors have attempted to cash in on the craze, designing cell phones that are highly reminiscent of the sleek lines and design features of the RAZR. Although some of those phones are nice in their own right, it is the authentic RAZR V series that is the true trend setter.
Stylistically and aesthetically, the V series phones are virtually interchangeable. The differences between various V series phones are generally minor and can be considered a wash, with one major exception. The original V3 and V3i are the only two V series RAZR phones that run on GSM Sim Cards. This means that only the V3 and V3i are quad band world phones, able to be used anywhere in the world that sim cards are available. This factor may be quite important if you plan to take your phone while traveling internationally.
The RAZR is a completely different kind of phone. The sleek, thin body and glossy finish give the phone an almost regal appearance. Indeed, the original RAZR was regarded as a high-fashion accessory complete with a royal price tag. It was not until 2005 that prices lowered enough for the RAZR to become a mass market choice.
RAZR is not just a pretty phone though. The functionality of the V3i, as well as others in the line, is top notch. The display screen is TFT, a particularly nice touch that makes the display easy to read even at an angle. The phone is capable of multimedia applications including a variety of games. Several games or game demos are pre-installed while others must be downloaded for an additional charge. The V3i can be used as a music player as well, offering high quality music audio. The phone is Bluetooth enabled and also has a mini-USB slot, making it easy to connect to devices from headsets to printers as well as a laptop or desktop PC. The V3i runs on the older GPRS data network, meaning that the web browser will achieve connection speeds comparable to those of dialup internet. If you need faster internet then the V3m, which is on the new EV-DO network may be the better choice for you.
The RAZR set the standard for the next generation of cell phones, but the phone does have a downside. Some people do not like the distinctive clamshell appearance and recessed buttons, so be certain to handle one prior to purchase to make sure that you find the phone comfortable. The V series, like any other multimedia phone, tends to drain its battery quickly. High capacity batteries are strongly recommended. Finally, due to the slim line design, the phone is prone to being scratched or damaged. It is wise to invest in a well constructed case of leather or another durable material.
Despite the few problems, the Motorola RAZR V3i, like the others in the V series, combines both form and function. RAZR has become a household name and while the exact design changes slightly with each new release, the essence of RAZR continues. A V3i is a definite worthwhile investment.
