Moto Q Review

motorola moto q review Rating: 6.0 / 10

Motorola, the inventor of the original mobile phone, has released its latest product which combines style with technological innovation. The Moto Q is comparably one of the thinnest QWERTY phones on the market, nearly half the size of its main competitors. The exterior of the phone features raised keys, a wide and colorful QVGA screen and easy-to-use buttons. The ultra-thin body style of the Q makes it an easy phone to pocket.

The phone's large and vibrant screen makes black text easily readable against traditional white backgrounds, even in the brightest of sunlight. A downfall to the Q's screen is the low contrast home screen and camera viewfinder which can be difficult to view under certain indoor and outdoor lighting. As with other Motorola products, the voice quality with the Q is extremely clear when held to one's ear, but the microphone feature can be susceptible to high noise levels and wind. Ring tones are easily discernible, even at a far distance and the speakerphone has a loud and resonant sound. The phone is also compatible with Bluetooth accessories, including the new RAZRWIRE Bluetooth eyewear.

The QWERTY keys offer easy usage, especially in dim lit areas, due to its sleek and luminescent design. The layout can be somewhat difficult to manage due to the placement of the letter and symbol keys, and users may need to spend some time learning how to maneuver them. Although the keys can be a little slippery due to their hard plastic covers, the user definitely knows when a key is struck thanks to the sound it makes after pushing the button. This can eliminate the problem of misspelled messages and punctuation errors.

Navigation can be simple thanks to the scroll wheel and button located on the side of the phone. This feature allows the user to navigate programs with a single hand, making it beneficial for work purposes. The scroll wheel can be pushed in when selecting programs on the phone, and the button next to it brings the user back to previous selections. The ridges surrounding the navigation keys and D-pad, both located on the front of the phone, prevent the thumb from slipping during use.

The Q has a professional quality because it employs Microsoft's Windows Mobile software and the new Mobile 5.0 platform, making messaging cost-effective. This allows for easy web surfing and messaging, especially since the e-mail program is fully capable of supporting eight accounts. Attachments are read using the Picsel Viewer application and can visibly show highly complex Word documents and PDF files. The phone's storage is capable of holding up to 49 MB of information, but users are not able to edit any documents. The miniSD card slot will eventually enable the use of Wi-Fi, push e-mail from Microsoft Exchange services and the ability to serve as a modem for a laptop.

The Q offers a 1.3 mega pixel camera with an LED flash. A rectangular viewfinder oriented in the same direction as the sensor makes it easy to frame shots. The video feature is fast, and users can record video clips in unlimited lengths. Sound is clear, eliminating the background noises that often cloud up recordings on other phones.

The battery life of the Q is another pleasurable experience, lasting a little over two days when used in normal conditions. Many of the features offered with the phone, such as the Bluetooth's attachments, do not seem to drain any extra battery power when in use. Overall, the Moto Q provides customers with easy-to-use features and quality performance capabilities.
