Cell Phone Spam
As any Internet user knows, junk e-mail (generally known as Spam) is an epidemic problem in today's world. Spam filters for e-mail accounts are plentiful and while they do not solve the issue, they do offer a strong defense. Spam has now entered the cell phone universe and due to the unique technological limitations of cell phones, can be difficult to fight. Compounding the problem is the fact that many cell phone users are charged for each text message received. This means that you may find yourself paying a premium for the privilege of receiving unsolicited advertising.
Fortunately, the sheer volume of cell phone Spam in the market today means that a niche market has been created for anti-Spam techniques, both legal and technological. The Can-SPAM Act of 2003 created FCC regulations that went into effect in March 2005. The FCC rules prohibit the transmission of unrequested commercial email messages to any wireless device including cell phones. This means that you have legal recourse against any solicitation sent to you from an address that includes an Internet domain name. Unfortunately, the FCC ban does not cover SMS messages that come from a cell phone number rather than an email address. However, under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, if you list your cell number with the National Do Not Call Registry then marketers will be prohibited from sending you texts as well making voice calls to you.
Some anti-Spam filtering programs will work on email that you retrieve with your cell phone. Two of the most common are SpamArrest and Vanquish vqME. Both require a paid subscription plan, and both work at the server level to keep Spam from entering your email stream. Both products work well, although neither is invincible. Also, SpamArrest supports only one user with up to five email accounts, meaning that couples or families would need to purchase separate accounts.
It is more difficult to fight Spam SMS messages which are sent from a cell phone number rather than an email address. Most cellular service providers allow you to block texts from individual numbers or even create a "white list" of trusted numbers. With a white list, only those numbers on the list are permitted to send you text messages. This may not be the best solution for those who use their phones for work, however.
If you receive a Spam text message, contact your cellular provider immediately. You may be able to both block the number from which the Spam was sent and receive a credit on your bill for the text charge. Service providers vary in their policies, however.
Spam is an epidemic problem throughout the world of modern technology. As cell phone Spam is fairly new, controls are not yet fully in place. Nonetheless, cell phone Spam has been recognized as a growing concern and companies are beginning to take steps to fight the Spam. It is expected that over time, anti-Spam features will be as prevalent on cell phones as they are on personal computers. Patience and awareness of the problem and your right to fight it are key.
