Cell Phone Games

Cell Phone Game There was a time when the cell phone was designed for one purpose only: to make telephone calls when away from a landline phone. As technology has grown and changed, cell phones have become much more than simply voice call machines. Even many low-end cell phones of today offer cameras with video recording capability, Internet connectivity, and features that make the phones more similar to Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) or even small computers than to the landline phones that cell phones now replace.

As any computer user is well aware, one of the primary lures of the home computer is the ability to play games. Today's cell phones offer the same ability and modern advances in technology now allow cellular services to offer a dizzying array of game choices. Most cell phones come with a few simple games pre-loaded, along with demo versions of downloadable games. Downloading games costs money, but generally the price is low. Many services offer their games for a small repeating charge each month, billed directly to your cell phone bill, rather than an upfront cost to purchase.

A simple Internet search will show a plethora of games in mobile versions, ready to be downloaded to your phone. Game design companies such as Electronic Arts are offering many of their new games as well as old favorites through their websites. The sites generally allow you to search by cell phone carrier and manufacturer to find only those games that are compatible with your particular phone.

Websites also exist that allow you to download free games as well as other software for your cell phone. It is possible to download a virus to your phone just as you can to your computer, so be careful what you download. Many of the free sites have good customer ratings and are safe, but be on your guard.

Games that are currently available for cell phones range from the simplistic to the quite advanced. As with a computer, be sure that your cell phone can handle the requirements of the more elaborate games. Puzzle games are especially popular, as are such retro 1980s games as Frogger and Pac-Man. The low system requirements make both categories of games the best choice for older or lower end cell phones. If your phone can handle them, elaborate new games are now often released in mobile versions, offering the gamut from poker to sword and sorcery quest-based games. One of our favorite games is for the Treo, called Bejeweled 2. The beauty about this game is that it makes great use of the Treo's touch screen - you slide your style across the pieces to swap them. There is no need to use the keypad. You can check out Bejeweled here.

As technology continues to improve, cell phones are moving rapidly beyond their original use as voice call machines. Even the lowest end cell phones currently on the market now resemble older PDAs in terms of functionality, and all are able to play older and more simplistic games. The newer, higher end phones offer a complete mobile gaming solution, allowing users to play complicated new titles. Whatever type of phone you have and whatever type of games interest you, you will be able to find games that will meet your needs.
